Then and now: A step in the right direction

They extubated Nicholas this morning and he is doing well on Biphasic CPAP. He seems to enjoy the freedom he has with his head and even though he has constant air going through his nose, we're sure he likes that better than the tube down his throat. We put in the picture of him intubated because he was very alert and you can see him with both eyes open. Today, he's all snuggled in enjoying some peace and quiet after the busy morning. We know we'll be here for at least a couple more months but seeing the slow progressions helps us realize we're all getting closer to going home.

You might notice in the second picture, a large blue stuffed hand (it's essentially a bean bag in the shape of a hand). It is called a "Zaky" and was a gift from friends to Nicholas. He really enjoys it and in fact, one of the nurse commented that the NICU is looking to purchase them (he is really on the cutting edge!)

  1. Dear Nicholas,
It's so good to see both of those eyes peering out at the world. Keep up the improvement and 3 pounds will be just around the corner. Some day you will be taking the milk so fast someone won't be able to keep up. Your hair is so dark and plentiful it makes me jealous. Hope you never have to worry about going bald when you are older like me. Enjoy that Zaky do-dad big hand. I'll bet it is comfortable for you.
We look forward to the day when we get to meet you in person. Forge ahead little dude.
    Love,
    Dave and Judy

  3. Dear Nicholas,
I am glad to see that you are enjoying The Zaky. I invented it for my own son, Zachary, when he was just as little as you eight years ago. I never liked leaving him the 155 nights that he was hospitalized, just as your parents don't like leaving you now. The Zaky allows them to leave their scent with you and you feel they are always there. Make sure the nurses and your parents check out the section on preemies on our website www.zakeez.com/NICU. Also, hope you are being Kangarooed because that was the time in the NICU where we had an intimate and personal moment, and I felt I really was doing something for Zachary. Check out our "Kangaroo Zak" - but even if you don't get our product please make sure you are held as much as possible on skin-to-skin. My phone is (800) 618 9259. We give discounts to hospitals and parents in the NICU.
p.s. Zachary's middle name is NICHOLAS!

  5. The Zaky reminds me of the Once-ler from Dr. Seuss's "The Lorax". I am officially predicting that this will be Nicholas's favorite book. You heard it here first.
