1 Month and 1 Kg!

Today Nicholoas is 30 days old, 1 kg (2.2 lbs) and 14.5 inches long, which means he is getting to be quite a big boy. Today with his afternoon "cares," which are the highlight of our day (afternoon cares involve changing his diaper, taking his temperature and blood pressure, washing his face, and measuring his belly) he was very awake and alert. Seeing his eyes and having him "notice" us makes us both very happy. During his cares today, the nurse made us little footprints (hence the picture.) For a point of reference, the footprints are on an index card. The nurses and doctors have all been great, and really make every effort to have us involved in his care. Being able to just be in his room all day (in a private room) is one of the best features in the design of this NICU. It is hard enough to have a child in the NICU and not be able to "bond" normally, but if we also had to be in a traditional NICU with 6 - 10 other babies in one room, that would make an already tough situation really tough. Speaking of bonding, since Nicholas is doing so well with Kangaroo-ing, we are going to be able to hold him every day vs. every thrid day. I see a "new highlight" of the day coming.

  1. How wonderful that the kangaroo holding is progressing to every day. There is no question that the intimate contact between the child and parents is of high importance. Keep up the stamina and good work Nicholas. Thanks for the updates and mention about the room and the differences it makes for all of you. Having been around hospitals for a long time we know what you mean about the "community" NICU. You are so right that this type gives you more of the one on one quality needed by the young dude.
Judy predicts he will have size 14 1/2 shoes when he's older based on those footprints. So neat to have those as a memento.
We look forward to hearing more about your bonding with Nicholas. That's so important for all of you. What a long way Nicholas has come in 30 days and it required much patience and perseverance from both Mommas.
We look forward to the blogs and sometimes is the best part of our day to read those. We are anxious to get to meet you little dude after you get out of there and home. Until then, keep entertaining both Moms and continue to grow and thrive.
Love to all three of you.

  2. Denise,
Darcie passed on your email to us to let us know. I just wanted to let you know that we are praying that your little guy will grow big and strong so that you can take him home and enjoy him from the comfort of your own home. We also pray for strength for you guys to get through this long and difficult process. Thinking of you! Erin Buys (for Brian too!)
